Out and About

Situated along mainland Europe’s most southerly coastlines with magnificent views across the Atlantic towards Africa, this part of southern Andalucia still retains much of its ancient Moorish past, unchanged in hundreds of years.
Traditional white washed houses, row upon row of olive groves, locally grown oranges, lemons, limes and melons, purebred horses, historic villages, towns and cities, mountains and valleys and a mild climate to lure you towards the ‘Coast of Light’ Spain’s best kept secret.

Our selection of properties, are nestled in and around the traditional fishing village of Conil de la Frontera, Situated between Gibraltar and Cadiz, this is the perfect base to explore the area. Jerez airport is only 45minutes away and you are less than 1 hour away from the historic seaport of Cadiz.
The famous battle of Trafalgar took place in1805, where Horatio Nelson lost his life and just a few minutes drive from Conil is Cape Trafalgar. The only danger modern seafarers face today, is the shallow rocky waters, which are marked by a tall proud lighthouse that casts its ray of light across this coastline.
If you drive east along the coast road, you will come across the wind surfing capital of Europe, Tarifa, where you can take the ‘Fast Cat’ to Tangiers.
Turn the corner and enter the straights of Gibraltar, where the sight of merchant and naval ships of all types and sizes will impress, not to mention the luxury cruise ships waiting to enter the Mediterranean .

The rugged North African coastline is a sight to savour, so do not forget your camera.
Travel west from Conil and you will stumble upon the market town of Chiclana, at the fish market here, you will be able to buy every type of seafood imaginable and you can be sure it’s a fresh catch.

Further along this coast you will find more modern resorts popping up, with an array of shopping centres, bars and restaurants.

Jerez with its many wine and sherry bodegas is also the equestrian capital of Spain and here you will see many fine examples of the ‘purebred’ Andalucian horse being expertly ridden.
Then, a little further north is the magnificent city of Seville, a must stop on your tour of the region for a cosmopolitan shopping spree to remember.

Conil is a vibrant town and is now one of the focal points of the Costa de la Luz. The main street leads down hill towards the beach, past an array of bars, restaurants, shops, banks and meat market and onwards through the centre arch into the old town. Now the fun really begins, the streets become narrow but your options widen.
At night, this area is alive with people of all ages. Families taking a stroll around the shops or couples making their way to one of hundreds of romantic candle lit restaurants.
Afterwards you can meander around the town. Every doorway on every corner is another bar or restaurant. You can keep in touch with the outside world at one of the local Internet café’s and buses run from Conil to all parts of the region.

Fuente del Gallo is only a very short drive west of Conil and less than 30 minutes walk along the beach. Its avenues are lined with palm trees and some of the most fabulous Villas you are ever likely to see. This part of the area has changed very little over the last 40 years and the focal point of Fuente remains, the El Marinero bar and restaurant. Philippe and his staff will make your whole family very welcome and you can dine outside on the front terrace, inside or in the very large gardens at the rear. Next-door is the small local supermarket, where you can pick up all your daily supplies including fresh bread, milk and eggs.

Roche is a modern urbanisation featuring some truly stunning properties and like all of the areas we feature, the beaches will dazzle you too. There are a couple of restaurants and shops, not to mention tennis courts and recreation areas. This is a great place to explore Conil to the east or La Barossa and Chiclana to the west. San Andres Golf. This little hide away is well situated for those of you looking for the best of both worlds. Golf is very popular in this area and this now 18 hole course suits players of every level. With a choice of luxury villas served by local bars and restaurants, you find everything you need – self contained. However, a short drive away is the centre of Collorado, where Antonio’s bar is a must visit, he is a great chef. The beaches and resorts of Conil, La Barossa and Chiclana are all very close by.

Local Cuisine
You will not need to travel far in Spain to happen upon a Venta (bar) or restaurant. Eating out in Spain is very much a way of life and the entire day seems to centre around it. Freshly prepared tapas, locally caught tuna and traditional paella are just a small selection of what you can expect to find on the menu in any of the thousands of bars and restaurants. Of course, local cuisine should be enjoyed with locally produced wines and sherry. Perhaps a glass of vino tinto, we recommend a traditional Rioja, Campo Viejo.

Fiestas or Ferias
Whatever the time of year, there always seems to be a feria or fiesta, taking place. Mostly, these celebrations are held to commemorate a religious event or a town carnival. Either way, they are sure to be colourful, lively and fun. In July, the most important fiesta of the year is that held in honour of ‘Virgen del Carmen’ the patron saint of sailors and fisherman. Check out Conil and Barbate, where the celebrations can last up to a week and cumulate in a spectacular procession at sea and a firework display. Jerez hosts a week long feria towards the end of April and it really is a case of everything equestrian.

Getting There
There are more and more options available these days. Ryanair & Monarch both operate a flights to Jerez from Stansted, Manchester or Exeter. Alternatively, Easy Jet fly into Malaga and there are a number of options to Gibraltar. You could always sail, to Santander and motor down! (See our website for more information)
